Tobias Richter is Associate Professor of Middle Eastern Archaeology at the Department of Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies at the University of Copenhagen.
Richter’s research focuses on the transition from hunting and gathering to agriculture in prehistory, with a particular focus on southwest Asia. His broader research interests include landscape archaeology, social and cultural interaction, lithic technology, human–environment interactions, as well as the intersections of archaeology, heritage, and politics.
As part of AEGIS, Richter leads research on early cropping systems in southwest Asia and Europe, investigating how different varieties of barley and wheat were cultivated and adapted by early farming communities, and how their genetic characteristics changed as they spread into Europe.
