Noah Fierer is a microbial ecologist, Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, and Fellow of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences, all at the University of Colorado Boulder. He also serves as Director of the Center for Microbial Exploration.
Fierer and his research group study the distribution and roles of microscopic organisms across a wide range of environments, and how microbes influence the health and functioning of ecosystems, plants, animals, and humans.
His current research examines the ecology of bacteria, fungi, and archaea in both natural and engineered systems, including soils, buildings, plants, and the atmosphere.
As part of AEGIS, Fierer and his group contribute by conducting research focused on ecological analyses of microbial data to assess what the microorganisms (or their genes) can tell us about past conditions, use of microbial data to quantify changes in source environments over time, reconstruct microbial contributions to ecosystem processes, and identify potentially important associations between microorganisms and plants.
