Mark Blaxter is Head of the Tree of Life Programme at the Wellcome Sanger Institute.
A zoologist by training, Blaxter uses genomics to uncover the deep roots of biodiversity, explore the unique biology of threatened organisms, and develop tools that support conservation and responses to climate change and other environmental pressures. He also builds methods for genome analysis, including raw and assembly data quality control, data visualisation, and interactive analytical tools that advance efforts to build the tree of life.
Within AEGIS, Blaxter leads the generation of modern reference genome sequences from species that are of key utility in mapping ancient environmental DNA sequence data and thus driving understanding of the genomics of ancient ecosystems.
