Lars Wörmer is an organic geochemist at MARUM, Center for Marine Environmental Sciences at the University of Bremen.
In his research, Wörmer focuses on the interpretation of chemical signatures - molecular proxies or biomarkers – that can inform on past climate, as well as on the composition and functioning of modern and ancient ecosystems. At MARUM, he has pioneered the use of Mass Spectrometry Imaging in geological archives, which enables the mapping of chemical signatures at micrometer resolution and their exploration in unprecedented detail.
As part of AEGIS, Wörmer and his team provide detailed climatic and environmental reconstructions for sites investigated in AEGIS, both natural and agricultural. In addition, specific lipid signatures are used to reveal important microbial processes or to identify vegetation changes and the emergence of specific traits in ancient and modern crops.
