Fergal Martin is the Eukaryotic Annotation Team Leader at EMBL’s European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI). He has strategic oversight for genome annotation for the Ensembl project and leads the GENCODE consortium.
Martin's research interests focus particularly on genome annotation in the contexts of biodiversity, pangenomics and AI. Throughout his career, he has played a central role in scaling the breadth and depth of genome annotation across thousands of species.
Within AEGIS, he oversees the delivery of the EMBL-EBI component, which includes release of reference genomes in Ensembl, release of reference and ancient metagenomes in MGnify, public archiving and standardisation of project data in the European Nucleotide Archive and the development of the AEGIS Data Portal.
